Memory Work
The Sacrament of the Altar AS THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY SHOULD TEACH IT IN A SIMPLE WAY TO HIS HOUSEHOLD WHAT IS THE SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR? It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink. Where is this written? The holy Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul write: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Bible Reading and Questions (To Be Completed Before Class)

1. Study the prophecy regarding the triumphal entry (Zechariah 9:9). Describe the King who was coming. 2. Why did Jesus cry over Jerusalem? Would He have reasons to cry over us? What? 3. Why did Jesus chase some people out of the temple? 4. What was particularly tricky about the question regarding taxes? 5. List several practical ways that people today “give Caesar what is his” and “give God what is His.” 6. In what sense is Jesus both David’s son and David’s Lord? 7. Since the widow had put in only two coins, how could Jesus say that she had given more than all the others? 8. What makes a gift acceptable to God (2 Corinthians 8:9, 9:7-15; 1 John 4:9-11)? 9. How are the widow’s gift and Jesus’ gift to us similar? How are they different? 10. Look closely at 21:5-7. What specifically were the disciples asking about? 11. Read 21:32 carefully. What is Jesus talking about? 12. Read vv. 8, 29-31, 34-36. What is Jesus’ command to His disciples? How does that command apply to us as we await the second coming? 13. Why was Jesus eager to celebrate the Passover with His disciples? 14. Jesus said the bread and wine were His __________ and ____________. 15. What did Jesus mean when He said that His body and blood were ‘given’ and ‘shed for you’ (Catechism, questions 287-288)? 16. What benefits does Christ give to people through he Lord’s Supper (Catechism, question 296)? 17. What do we call the day on which Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper? 18. What is Jesus’ prayer in the garden? What important lesson does Jesus’ example set for you in your prayer? 19. On what basis did council of the elders finally condemn Jesus? 20. Why did the chief priests have to take Jesus to Pilate (John 18:31)? 21. Think about Simon carrying Jesus’ cross. How do you carry Jesus’ cross today? Do you consider it an honor or a burden? Why? 22. What comfort comes to all people from Jesus’ conversation with the dying criminal? 23. What message did the angels give the women? How did the angels convince the women the message was true? 24. Why was the angels’ message so hard for the disciples to believe? 25. What was the hope of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus that seemed to end with Jesus’ death? Why did Jesus think they should have understood what had happened that morning? When did they recognize Jesus?
